Overseas Volunteer Groups

Are you interested in organising a group of Australian volunteers to travel overseas to undertake short-term development project in association with ADRA Australia?

Get Involved

Properly utilised volunteering can play an effective role in helping ADRA fulfill its humanitarian mission of working with people in poverty and hardship to create just and positive change through empowering partnership and responsible action.

However, a poorly or even wrongly implemented, volunteer projects can create dependency among those ADRA is committed to assisting, and can perpetuate false perceptions about cross-cultural partnerships and the role of international development and overseas aid.

To ensure a successful trip for those you are seeking to serve overseas and for your group, the following steps are to be taken:

STEP 1: To determine if your project might be implemented in partnership with ADRA, it is vital that you read ADRA Australia's Guidelines for Volunteer Groups Planning Overseas Projects. This document ensures that any activities conducted in ADRA's name prioritise the beneficiary's needs as well as comply with ADRA's and overseas regulations.

STEP 2: After reading these guidelines, if you decide to partner with ADRA Australia for your trip, you must submit a project proposal to ADRA's International Program unit for consideration. See the guidelines above for details about obtaining the appropriate proposal forms.

STEP 3: Once formal approval has been received, your proposal will also clearly outline which parts of your project expenses (if any) may be eligible to fundraise for in ADRA's name and/or receive tax-deductibility. Please note, any promotions of fundraising that use the name or logo of ADRA must have prior approval from the Marketing and Public Relations unit of ADRA Australia. Instructions and forms for requesting this approval are available here.

If you have any queries about this process, contact details for the appropriate person at ADRA to assist you are available in the guidelines above.
