ADRA Australia's Response to Solomon Island Quake

3 April 2007

News

Wahroonga, New South Wales— In response to the earthquake-triggered tsunami that hit western Solomon Islands on 2 April 2007, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Australia is in dialogue with ADRA Solomon Island staff on the ground who are conducting a needs and damage assessment in coordination with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO)

The ADRA Solomon Island
Acting Interim Country Director is attending a meeting today of the NDMO in the Solomons to obtain accurate information on the extent of the damage and needs.  The outcome of this meeting will enable ADRA Solomon Islands to determine its response.

An ADRA Australia staff member is currently in the Solomons on a monitoring trip and will be able to assist the local ADRA staff in preparing its response.

ADRA Australia has immediately made US$10,000 available to ADRA Solomon Islands for its emergency relief efforts.  Once their needs assessment is complete and a response plan is in place, ADRA Australia will consider additional funding.

To enable ADRA Australia to respond immediately to disasters of this nature in Australia or overseas, donations can be made to ADRA's general Disaster and Famine Relief Fund online or on 1800 242 372.

ADRA Australia engages in sustainable development programs and disaster relief for people in Australia and abroad and is part of the ADRA network, which has a presence in 125 countries. It is signatory to the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) Code of Conduct. For more information about ADRA Australia visit www.adra.org.au.
