ADRA Provides Drought Assistance this Christmas
19th December, 2007
ADRA Australia has allocated $10,000 each to community service organisations in Goondiwindi, Miles, St George, Barcaldine and Winton to distribute the funds to families and individuals affected by the ongoing drought.
“The financial assistance that has been provided by ADRA Australia takes a little bit of pressure off the families this Christmas as they know that they have one less bill to pay, “ said the Coordinator of the Goondiwindi Rural Family Support Program, Virginia Shipp.
ADRA Australia’s support has already helped families with fuel and grocery vouchers, food hampers, car registration and paying household bills and school fees. ADRA’s funding will continue to provide much-needed assistance to community members throughout the Christmas season.
“People who’ve been helped by this support are expressing such gratitude. They say it’s wonderful knowing that people are aware of their situation and are able to provide a helping hand,” said Ms. Shipp.
This assistance has been provided in response to prolonged drought in Queensland, which has forced many farmers to sell livestock, resulting in depleted income. The decrease in farm produce and husbandry has increased commodity prices in these areas, pushing the cost of living up and making it difficult for families to meet their basic needs.
