ADRA Responds to Disasters in Pacific
2nd October, 2009

ADRA has deployed an emergency response specialist to Samoa to help with the response efforts and is assisting with emergency shelter supplies. ADRA has several offices in the region and is evaluating the effects of the disasters on communities, especially those in low-lying coastal areas, and will work with affected communities to determine how best to support their response efforts.
“It is sad to hear of this disaster and how it may be affecting communities in the region,” said ADRA Australia’s Director of Emergency Management, Chris Olafson. “Many of these communities are poor and remote, so communication can be difficult, especially at times of emergency like this. We are working with partner ADRA offices, government bodies and fellow humanitarian agencies across the region to assist those affected as they recover and rebuild following this devastating disaster. Our hearts go out to those affected.”
ADRA Australia has opened a Pacific Disaster Appeal and is calling for support for their response efforts in the region. Donations can be made to ADRA Australia by calling 1800 242 372 or visiting ADRA Australia's website. Donations to ADRA Australia’s Pacific Disaster Appeal will be used to support the immediate disaster relief activities in the area. If the appeal raises more funds than are immediately needed, donations will be allocated to ADRA Australia’s ongoing emergency management activities in the region.
The tsunami that hit several Pacific nations was caused by a magnitude 8.3 earthquake that struck 190km off the southwest coast of American Samoa. The tsunami caused wide-spread damage in American Samoa, Samoa and Tonga. Reports from the region so far reveal that an estimated 140 people have died and 1000 people have been displaced from their homes. Entire communities have been destroyed and are in need of shelter, clean water and other immediate supplies.
