City2Surf Runners Raise Money for ADRA

11th August, 2008

News

Wahroonga, New South Wales — Forty-five supporters raised almost $5000 for the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Australia on Sunday 10 August in the Sun Herald City2Surf in Sydney, an increase of 15 participants on last year’s ADRA City2Surf team.

“It’s just great to see even more people stepping up for the poor in this way,” said ADRA Australia’s Donor Relations Officer, Matthew Siliga, who also participated in the run. “In many respects, distance is a measure of poverty because a lot of the world’s poor have to travel huge distances just to access things like clean water, food, healthcare and education. Participating in something like the City2Surf means that, in some small way, we are connecting with their struggle and doing something about it. We at ADRA extend a big thank you to everyone who has used this run to support people facing poverty and hardship.”

Sixteen of the forty-five ADRA team members also met or exceeded their fundraising targets, including Greg Dawick from Sydney, who raised more than $1000, and a group called Hope People, who collectively raised almost $1200.

City2Surf participants raised money for charity by creating personalised fundraising webpages which they emailed to family and friends requesting sponsorship. Funds raised for ADRA Australia will be used to support the charity’s work in Australia and overseas. Sponsorships can still be made to City2Surf runners, with fundraising webpages remaining active until Tuesday 9 September.

This is the second year the Sun Herald has partnered with Everyday Hero, a web-based fundraising service, to provide opportunity for participants to raise funds for charity. This year’s City2Surf has so far raised more than $1 million for charity.

The Sun Herald City2Surf has been running for 38 years and covers 14 kilometres from Sydney’s Hyde Park to Bondi Beach.
