Japan: ADRA Continues to Meet Ongoing Needs
14th June 2011
Wahroonga, New South Wales — The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) continues to meet the needs of victims affected by the 9.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the northeast corner of Japan on March 11.
ADRA Japan is continuing to distribute food and non-food items to a number of retirement centres in the hard-hit Myagi prefecture and is helping to support the Departure of Social Services through the provision of more than 750 meals during the past week.
In addition, ADRA Japan will be responding to a request by Fukushima's governor to provide household material and furniture for up to 17,500 homes. Similarly, the agency will be responsible for sourcing and delivering household materials and furtinure to more than 3,300 shelter homes in the cities of Watari and Higashi-Matsushima.
With many schools in the Fukushima region closed, many high school students are now forced to travel longer distances to school in neighbouring towns. In co-ordination with the Education Committee of Fukushima, ADRA will be providing 400 bicycles to help ease the commute.
"I must say thank you to those who have supported this response through ADRA Australia," said Jonathan Duffy, CEO of ADRA Australia. "It's only through your support that we can continue to respond."
Contributions to ADRA Australia's Disaster Preparedness and Response Fund will allow timely and appropriate response in times of disaster and assist communities to prepare for future emergencies.
