ADRA provides essentials in wake of Typhoon Washi

Wahroonga, New South Wales — While the Philippines government and non-government organisations work to kick-start clean-up and rebuilding efforts following Typhoon Washi, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is providing life-saving essentials to those who survived the deadly disaster.
On 16 December Typhoon Washi made landfall in the eastern parts of Mindanao, Philippines. In less than 12 hours the region was inundated with more than a month's worth of rain, causing severe flash floods and landslides.
More than 335,000 people have been affected, and more than 45,000 need emergency shelter and supplies.
The majority of the 957 people killed in the disaster were from the Cagayan de Oro and Iligan Cities, which are among ADRA's target communities.
As the government prepares mass graves for the victims, ADRA is meeting the immediate needs of survivors by distributing emergency food and water. In addition, ADRA is working with local banks to make emergency funds available to 1,280 families through an effecient and secure cash transfer program.
"These small cash grants empower families to make choices about their immediate futures - from the food the will eat, to the clothes they will wear," said Chris Olafson, Director of Emergency Management for ADRA Australia.
"It will also inject money into family and small businesses that would otherwise be left with no other option than to close up."
