Civil Society Strengthening

Water Sanitation Since 1980, nearly half the world's least developed countries have endured major conflict. Over 90 percent of wars now take place within states rather than between them. In the 1990's alone, wars claimed over 5 million lives.*

ADRA's civil society strengthening seeks to engage community based organisations and groups to function more effectively and to respond to their development needs, including peace building and conflict resolution, improving community governance, the sustainable management of community resources, the employment of youth and the protection of children and human rights.

Civil society strengthening initiatives enable communities to experience reduced incidents of conflict and to become more resilient to negative lifestyle behaviours.

What ADRA is doing…

ADRA supports a number of civil society programs in the Pacific, Asia and Africa. These include peace building and conflict resolution between ethnic groups, advocating with a national government on the health and social impacts of tobacco use, building capacity of church organisations to more effectively deliver basic education and primary health care and establishing new community organisations which can then advocate on their community's behalf to national government.
