Food Security
What ADRA is doing…
ADRA Australia meets immediate food needs during times of emergency. In its development projects, ADRA seeks long-term solutions to provide food security. Working with communities to improve the growth, storage, and marketing of their food crops helps them to become self-sufficient and less vulnerable to poverty.
Whether it is dairy farming in the highlands of Kenya, improved rice paddies in Laos or climate-resistant vegetable gardens in Mongolia, ADRA Australia is helping communities have secure food sources year around.
The process involves gathering information about the target community. Planners explore a community's and household's nutritional needs and food supply, as well as their ability to purchase or cultivate an adequate food supply. They also evaluate local production, the type of imported food, and natural or man-made disruptions to food production. Related issues such as hygiene and sanitation are also assessed. Then, in dialogue with the community, new solutions for increasing both the quantity and the quality of the food supply can be explored.
Recognising that food security problems arise from a combination of factors, such as poverty, drought, lack of access to markets, ADRA often plans and implements integrated programs that meet multiple needs.Whether it is dairy farming in the highlands of Kenya, improved rice paddies in Laos or climate-resistant vegetable gardens in Mongolia, ADRA Australia is helping communities have secure food sources year around.
