Health

(Including HIV and AIDS, Water and Sanitation)

Water Sanitation Millions have little or no access to health-care services, pure water and basic sanitation needs. Even where health services are provided in developing countries, they are frequently under-resourced and unable to cope with demand, or individuals are unable to afford healthcare services. Increasingly ADRA's focus has been on disease prevention. ADRA Australia sees mothers as the first-level health-care provider to her children and family. By providing mothers with knowledge about health, nutrition, and reproduction, and supporting that education with primary health-care services, women, their families and their communities have healthier futures.

ADRA Australia also works with communities to develop their own water supply, using simple, effective, technologically-appropriate and environmentally-friendly systems to bring water into the community. improving sanitation along with better hygiene helps alleviate many illnesses.

What ADRA is doing…

ADRA's health programs are designed to address local indicators of health, including infant mortality, under-age five mortality, maternal mortality, access to health-care services, safe water and sanitation, immunisation, percentage of malnutrition, and average life expectancy.

Most often, ADRA's health programs focus on activities such as improving access to clean, potable water and sanitation systems. ADRA oftentimes partners with local communities to provide materials and technical expertise to enable communities to construct gravity-fed and water well systems. Community members are also taught how to use as well as maintain the water system to ensure sustainability.

ADRA also believes it is critical to respond to the increase in HIV and AIDS in many countries and incorporates AIDS awareness education in most health-related projects.

ADRA is meeting health needs through HIV and AIDS awareness education programs in Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, and Cambodia; Tobacco-Free Youth programs in Vietnam, Mongolia and Cambodia; and the development of a specialised health training curriculum for Indigenous people in Australia. Because of ADRA assistance, communities can live healthy, longer lives.
