Creating entrepreneurship opportunities in Nepal
17 October, 2024
Nami lives in rural Nepal with her husband and two sons. Together with her husband she did physical labour to earn an income. But the work was taxing, and the pay was poor. She struggled to meet her day-to-day expenses.
“I wanted to start my own business, but this was impossible because we did not have the money,” Nami says.
Through ADRA’s project, which is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP), Nami’s dream to start a business came true! She received goat rearing and market training from ADRA, as well as some goats. She also participated in the local ADRA Village Savings and Loans Association, where community members pool collective funds to offer small business loans to members. Together with a small loan from the group and the training she received from ADRA, Nami started her own goat business.

Nami’s dream of starting a business came true
Now, Nami has 10 goats, and three of them are pregnant. In two months, she expects she will have up to 15 goats. Since she launched her business, she has sold one breeding goat and three goats. The money from these sales has helped her cover her children’s school fees, general household expenses, and the purchase of a hut for her goats. And Nami has successfully paid back her small loan.
“Before, I had very little money and confidence,” Nami says. “But my goat business has helped me overcome these challenges. And now I can invest in my children’s education.
“This change is important for me. I have been able to work on my own business. I have been self-dependent, and I am proud of what I have been able to achieve. Even small support leads to remarkable earnings.”
