ADRA has responded to flooding after a cyclone affected parts of Fiji earlier this month.

On April 1, Tropical Cyclone Josie passed over Fiji affecting mainly the western part of Fiji. While it was only a Category 1 storm, parts of the country experienced severe flooding due to heavy rainfall over a short period of time.

Six people died during the floods, with thousands of others affected. Dozens of evacuation centres opened to supply food and shelter to people fleeing the rising waters.

A team of ADRA staff and volunteers distributed 99 water and sanitation kits to families the affected areas in Ba Province.

Each kit contained:

  • 2 x 10 litre collapsible water tanks
  • 1 x 7 litre bucket with lid
  • 1 x water filter
  • 5 x 80g bathing soap
  • 1 x 500g washing bar
  • 1 x pack sanitary pads

The team also conducted health awareness sessions to prevent the increase in likelihood of outbreak of water-borne diseases.

The initial response was funded by ADRA Australia, ADRA New Zealand and the Fiji Mission.
