Devotion 6 – Belonging to God
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9
There is nothing more powerful than belonging.
Having a place, group of people, or purpose to which you belong can bring light into even the darkest moments of our lives.
Scripture reminds us that as believers we are God’s – we belong to Him now and for eternity. There is nothing more powerful than that.
Take a moment to reflect on how belonging to God has changed your life in these three ways:
- Belonging to God gives us confidence
During life’s worst moments – and even at OUR worst – God won’t ever let you go, and there’s nothing you or anyone can do to change that. As it says in Romans 8:38-39 ‘nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God’. - Belonging to God bring us comfort
Even if you’re alone, God is there. There is nowhere we can go where God isn’t (and in Deuteronomy 31:8 we are told He even goes before us). God is always present in our lives because we belong to Him. What an amazing comfort during times of loneliness, isolation, and solitude. - Belonging to God makes us thankful
There is nothing we could ever do to earn God’s love; we are His only because He has chosen us. And, even despite our mistakes or current circumstance He has given and wants to continue giving us good things (Romans 8:28). No wonder 1 Thessalonians 5:16 encourages us to ‘Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances.’
Lord, give me the confidence, comfort and thankfulness that comes from belonging to You today.
