20 February, 2016
A category five tropical cyclone bearing down on Fiji threatens to devastate the country. Your donation to our Disaster Relief Fund can help people who have been affected. Urgent assistance is needed. Donate now. Cyclone Winston is travelling westward and is predicted to make landfall early on Sunday (local time). Winds are averaging 230 kilometres per hour, with gusts up to 325km/h. ADRA has prepositioned supplies in Fiji including:
- 1,000 water containers
- 4,000 bars of soap
- Water purification tablets
- And other hygiene and sanitation items
Donate now to ensure ADRA can respond immediately. ADRA Australia’s Humanitarian Program Coordinator Beryl Hartmann said the storm could devastate Fiji. “While it’s still early days, forecasts predict Cyclone Winston could be the worst cyclone to hit the country.” “The main thing is that people prepare for the worst and have a plan in place. Tie down any loose items and know where the nearest evacuation centres are.” Having responded extensively to Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu last year, ADRA is preparing to extend similar assistance to Fiji. “We stand ready to offer emergency assistance as soon as the cyclone passes. Our staff receive emergency training for disasters like this and I’m confident we can respond quickly.” “ADRA has a strong presence on the ground and our existing partnerships will allow ADRA personnel to respond efficiently to this disaster.” The storm surge will bring heavy rain and possible flooding, as well as hurricane strength winds that could flatten entire villages. In March last year, ADRA distributed shelter, hygiene kits, food and water to thousands of people affected by Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu. ~ ~ ~ ADRA Australia is a Christian aid and humanitarian agency that empowers communities and responds to disasters in Australia, the Pacific, Asia and Africa.
