The Rohingya refugee crisis has left more than 400,000 people displaced, forced to flee their homes in Myanmar across the border to Bangladesh in recent weeks.
Hundreds of Rohingya have been killed, while hundreds of thousands of children, women and men are sheltering in muddy, makeshift refugee camps in Bangladesh. Many are still trying to cross mountains, dense bush and rice fields to reach safety in Bangladesh, surviving for weeks with minimal food. This is an ongoing crisis and it’s not known if the Rohingya will be able to return to their homes in Myanmar.
The immediate needs are food, hygiene and shelter items. ADRA is currently assembling food and shelter supplies to provide to those most in need, and preparing to scale up its response to include bedding kits, personal hygiene kits, kitchen sets and temporary shelter. Food parcels contain lentils, salt, sugar and oil to complement rice provided by the United Nations World Food Program. The first distributions, reaching more than 32,000 people, began in Cox’s Bazaar in early October.

Samira cradles her grandson as she recounts the long, perilous journey from Bangladesh to Myanmar. Samira says she fled after her 4 daughters were killed.
Samira carried her grandson as she walked for days to reach the refugee camp at Cox’s Bazaar in Bangladesh. During the journey she traversed mountainous ranges and dense bushland.
Tears roll down Samira’s face as she tells her story and relives her fear. She is safe – for now. But Samira is one of more than 400,000 Rohingya refugees who face great uncertainty about accessing enough food and proper shelter.
